Industry thus remains focused on the nation’s most important needs, without the need for central direction.īut the system is automatic only when there is free trade and competition. Where there is a glut, prices and profits are low, producers switch their capital and enterprise elsewhere. Where things are scarce, people are prepared to pay more for them: there is more profit in supplying them, so producers invest more capital to produce them. The countries that prosper are those that grow their capital, manage it well, and protect it.Ī fourth theme is that this system is automatic. But if people are going to build up their capital, they must be confident that it will be secure from theft. The more that is invested in better productive processes, the more wealth will be created in the future. Smith’s third theme is that a country’s future income depends upon this capital accumulation. This leaves producers with a surplus that they can exchange with others, or use to invest in new and even more efficient labour-saving machinery. Huge efficiencies can be gained by breaking production down into many small tasks, each undertaken by specialist hands. And the way to maximise it, he argued, was not to restrict the nation’s productive capacity, but to set it free.Īnother central theme is that this productive capacity rests on the division of labour and the accumulation of capital that it makes possible. Today, we would call it gross national product. Smith’s radical insight was that a nation’s wealth is really the stream of goods and services that it creates. The prevailing view was that gold and silver was wealth, and that countries should boost exports and resist imports in order to maximize this metal wealth. The first theme in The Wealth of Nations is that regulations on commerce are ill-founded and counter-productive. To this day, it's still deemed as an essencial to wear Racing Armor if a player wants to adventure to the world of Racing. Since the most used method was through Thunder Run Racing, Racers within Clans begun spread the suggestion of using the Armors to boost their speed in races, calling them Racing Armors over Viking Armors because that is what they were in hindsight. At the time, it was important for Clans to keep a constant earning of Trophies due to an annual event that would challenge Clans all over the game - Clash of Clans had Clans fight for who earns the most Trophies for exclusive prizes. The Armors begun building their legacy when they were used to achieve more first places, in return, more Trophies were gathered and allowed the Clan to climb to the Top 10. In another unknown update, two Armors could be obtained through Redeem Codes - the Skrill Lightning Armor (minus the Shoulders) and the Stormcutter Armor. It's one of the two Armors without any Stat Modifiers, and the only one to not follow the winged chestplate look. To this day, small apperal pieces are released with one or two Stat Modifiers such as the Bewilderbeast Ice Crown with 5% Flight Speed.īack then, Racing Armor was officially defined as Viking Armor - armor sets themed after a Dragon species - and the first Viking Armor to be released was the Snow Wraith Armor in July 31st, 2015. Contrary to what it's thought, Racing Gear has existed years before the introduction of the Racing Armor as small apperal pieces and sets, such as the Icetorm Expedition Helm and the Dragon Rider set. I have seen representatives of peoples over there who for generations through, in the dumbness of unutterable suffering, have known what the weight of those armaments and the weight of that power meant. The great nations of the world have been asleep, but God knows the other nations have not been asleep. The thing is inconceivable and can not happen." Very well, could not it happen? Did not it happen? Are we satisfied now what the balance of power means? It means that the stronger force will sometimes be exercised or an attempt be made to exercise it to crush the other powers. It can not be that he speaks for a great Government. Her military men published books and told us what they were going to do with it, but we dismissed them. What we shut our eyes against deliberately was the probability that she would make the use of her preparation that she did finally make of it. Nobody was ignorant of what Germany was doing. There were wise men in Great Britain, there were wise men in the United States, who pointed out to us not only what they suspected, but what we all knew with regard to the preparations for the use of force in Europe. It has been my privilege to come into somewhat intimate contact with that interesting and delightful people, and I realize now that for nearly 50 years, ever since the settlement which took Alsace-Lorraine away from them in 1871, they have been living under the constant dread of the catastrophe which at last came and their thought throughout this conference was that they must concert some measure, must draw together some kind of cooperative force, which would take this intolerable dread from their hearts, that they could not live another 50 years, expecting what would come at last. I believe, my fellow countrymen, that the only people in Europe who instinctively realized what was going to happen and what did happen in 1914 was the French people. We wished always to be the mediators of justice and of right, but we thought that the cool spaces of the ocean to the east and the west of us would keep us from the infections that came, arising like miasmatic mists out of that arrangement of power and of suspicion and of dread. I am glad to say that I am not justified in adding that the policy of the world was ever conceived by us upon the basis of the advantage of America. It was either the advantage of Germany or the advantage of Great Britain or the advantage of Italy or the advantage of Japan. Every bit of the policy of the world, internationally speaking, was made in the interest of some national advantage on the part of the stronger nations of the world. Not the balance that you try to maintain in a court of justice, not the scales of justice, but the scales of force one great force balanced against another force. This group of nations thought that it represented one set of principles that group of nations thought that it represented another set of principles and that the best that could be accomplished in the world was this that they used to call the balance of power. So there were drawn together groups of nations which stood armed, facing one another, which stood drawing their power from the vitality of people who did not wish to be subordinated to them, drawing their vitality from the energy of great peoples who did not wish to devote their energy to force, but wished to devote their energy to peace. The old order of things was not to depend upon the general moral judgment of mankind, not to base policies upon international right, but to base policies upon international power. The old order of things the rest of the world seemed to have got in some sense used to. I mean that it is in a state of mind which may bring about the dissolution of governments if we do not enter into a world settlement which will really in fact and in power establish justice and right. I do not mean that it is in a state of mind which will bring about the dissolution of governments. For, my fellow citizens, what does not seem to me realized in this blessed country of ours is the fact that the world is in revolution. To hear some gentlemen you would think it was an arrangement for the inconvenience of the United States, whereas, as a matter of fact, my fellow citizens, it is a world settlement, the first ever attempted, attempted upon broad lines which were first laid down in America. You have heard so many little things about the treaty that perhaps you would like to hear some big things about it. Your honor, your excellency, my fellow countrymen, I have come here to discuss a very solemn question, and I shall have to ask your patience while you bear with me in discussing somewhat in detail the very great matter which now lies not only before the consideration of the people of the United States but before the consideration of the people of the world. The show ran from January 11, 1983, to May 17, 1994, but reruns still continue to appear in many broadcast areas and countries, including the non-commercial digital subchannel network Create and the streaming service Hulu. Ross said he did the show for free and made his income from how-to books, videotapes and art supplies. He moved home to Florida in 1989 but continued to travel to Muncie every three months to tape the show. In 1983, PBS station WIPB lured him to Muncie, Indiana with the promise of creative freedom, and he found a kinship with the staff. In 1982, a station in Falls Church, Virginia aired a taping of his art class as a pilot, and 60 PBS stations signed up for the show in the first year. Ross was noted for his permed hair, which he ultimately disliked but kept after he had integrated it into the company logo. Ross, his wife, and Kowalski pooled their savings to create his company, which struggled at first. Annette Kowalski, who had attended one of his sessions in Clearwater, Florida, convinced Ross he could succeed on his own. He returned to Florida, studied painting with Alexander, joined his "Alexander Magic Art Supplies Company" and became a traveling salesman and tutor. He retired from the Air Force in 1981 as a master sergeant. Eventually, Ross's income from sales surpassed his military salary. Ross studied and mastered the technique, began painting and then successfully selling Alaskan landscapes that he would paint on novelty gold-mining pans. : 17–18 Alexander used a 16th-century painting style called alla prima (Italian for 'first attempt'), widely known as "wet-on-wet", that allowed him to create a painting within thirty minutes. Ross was working as a part-time bartender when he discovered a TV show called The Magic of Oil Painting, hosted by German painter Bill Alexander. Ross said, "They'd tell you what makes a tree, but they wouldn't tell you how to paint a tree." He found himself frequently at odds with many of his painting instructors, who were more interested in abstract painting. Career as a painterĭuring his 20-year Air Force career, Ross developed an interest in painting after attending an art class at the Anchorage U.S.O. Having held military positions that required him to act tough and mean, "the guy who makes you scrub the latrine, the guy who makes you make your bed, the guy who screams at you for being late to work", Ross decided he would not raise his voice when he left the military. He developed his quick painting technique during brief daily work breaks. : 15 He rose to the rank of master sergeant and served as the first sergeant of the clinic at Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska, where he first saw the snow and mountains that later appear as recurring themes in his paintings. In 1961, 18-year-old Ross enlisted in the United States Air Force and was put into service as a medical records technician. : 22 Military career Ross during his Air Force years, giving a painting demonstration in Fairbanks, Alaska. While working as a carpenter with his father, he lost part of his left index finger, which did not affect his ability to later hold a palette while painting. Ross dropped out of high school in the 9th grade. He had a half-brother Jim, whom he mentioned in passing on his show. As an adolescent, Ross cared for injured animals, including armadillos, snakes, alligators and squirrels, one of which was later featured in several episodes of his television show. Ross was born in Daytona Beach, Florida, to Jack and Ollie Ross, a carpenter and a waitress respectively, and raised in Orlando, Florida. Ross would subsequently become widely known through his posthumous internet presence. He was the creator and host of The Joy of Painting, an instructional television program that aired from 1983 to 1994 on PBS in the United States, CBC in Canada, and similar channels in Latin America, Europe and elsewhere. Robert Norman Ross (Octo– July 4, 1995) was an American painter, art instructor, and television host.
